PowerStory #11: Rediscovering Confidence

Chapter 1: Losing Her Spark

For nearly three years, Yana had carried the title of manager. At first, the role was a milestone she wore proudly—proof of the hard work and long nights she had invested in her career. She used to stride into meetings with a clear head, her team looking to her for direction.

But lately, the confidence that once steadied her had thinned. Younger hires were joining the company—fresh graduates and fast learners who seemed to catch on quicker than she ever had. She watched them breeze through new tools, pitch ideas with ease, and win recognition from senior leaders.

Maybe I don’t belong here anymore, she thought, forcing a smile in a meeting while applause filled the room for a junior staff member’s presentation.

That quiet comparison began to follow her everywhere. Reports she used to finish with confidence now felt like tests she could fail. Her silence in discussions grew louder.

Eventually, management noticed. Instead of criticism, they suggested she attend counseling sessions through the company’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP).

Nervous but willing, Yana went. To her surprise, the first session felt like a small relief—a safe space where she could finally speak freely.

Question:

Was this the beginning of her downfall—or the start of something new?

Chapter 2: Reclaiming Herself

Encouraged by that small shift, Yana returned for more sessions. Each time, she uncovered pieces of herself she had pushed aside. She realized how much of her worth she had been tying to comparisons, forgetting the unique strengths she already carried.

Her counselor reminded her of the projects only she could have led, the stability her team leaned on, and the wisdom that came from years of experience. Slowly, Yana began to see that the younger employees weren’t threats—they were simply bringing their own gifts to the table, just as she did.

One insight stayed with her: Confidence isn’t about being better than someone else—it’s about being true to the value you already bring.

At work, she spoke up in meetings again, not to compete but to contribute. She even mentored a new hire, sharing lessons she once struggled to learn alone. When her colleague succeeded, Yana clapped the loudest—this time without the sting of comparison.

By the end of her sessions, she didn’t just feel like her old self again—she felt stronger. Yana no longer measured herself against others. She had her own yardstick now, built on growth, resilience, and the quiet steadiness that made her a leader worth following.

Epilogue: Workplace Well-being Lessons

The Trap of Comparison
Yana had been a manager for years, but seeing younger hires excel made her question her worth and competence.

Even high-performing employees can silently struggle with self-doubt. Create mentorship opportunities where experience and fresh talent complement each other instead of competing.

Declining Performance Is a Signal
Yana’s work began to suffer—not because she lacked skills, but because self-doubt had taken over.

A dip in performance may point to deeper well-being issues. Approach with empathy and curiosity before jumping to conclusions about capability.

A Safe Space Sparks Healing
During her first counseling session, Yana felt lighter simply because she was listened to without judgment.

Safe spaces—whether through EAP, coaching, or open-door policies—give employees the courage to share what they’re carrying.
