PowerStory #17: Maybe This Is It

Chapter 1: Losing Access, Losing Confidence

Den had always taken pride in his work. For years, he was the go-to person for managing complex projects as he was always reliable, resourceful, and calm under pressure. But lately, something had changed. Meetings felt colder, conversations shorter. He started to feel invisible in the very place where he once felt he belonged.

Then one morning, he noticed that his access to some project files was removed. The software he used daily no longer recognized his login. At first, he thought it was a technical glitch. But when he raised it to his manager and days passed without any update, unease began to settle in.

“Is this their way of phasing me out?” he thought.

He couldn’t help but wonder if his age had something to do with it or if perhaps the company was ready to move on without him. The thought made his chest tighten. Each day he showed up at work, unable to do the tasks he once led, made him feel smaller and more insignificant. Eventually, he stopped going in altogether.

At home, Den tried to distract himself, but the uncertainty kept him restless. He missed the rhythm of work, the sense of purpose it gave him. When a former colleague reached out and offered him a job abroad, he almost said yes on the spot. Maybe this was his sign to move on. Maybe this is it.

But something in him resisted. Deep down, he still cared, not just about the job, but about the people and the purpose it once gave him. Torn between staying and leaving, Den decided to seek help and clarity through support sessions provided by the company’s EAP provider.

Question:

If this were happening to you, what support or information would help you understand your place in the organization?

Chapter 2: The Real Reason Unlocked

In his first few sessions through the company’s EAP provider, Den could barely find the words to describe what he was feeling – the uncertainty, the anxiety, the sleepless nights filled with “what ifs.” But the more he talked, the more the noise in his mind began to quiet down.

One question from his EAP counselor struck him deeply:

“What if this situation isn’t happening to you, but for you?”

That simple question made him pause. Maybe this was an opportunity to see himself beyond his role and to rediscover what he could still offer.

So Den made a choice. Instead of withdrawing, he decided to re-engage. He started showing up again, even when it was uncomfortable. He sought new ways to contribute, like mentoring younger teammates, offering insights from his years of experience, and helping improve team processes. To his surprise, he felt a sense of purpose return.

Eventually, he asked for a meeting with his manager. His heart pounded as he walked into the room, unsure what to expect. But when he finally opened up, his manager listened genuinely. He explained that the file access removal was due to an ongoing system transition. Nothing personal. No hidden motive. Just a technical change.

Den sat there in silence for a moment – part relieved, part humbled. All the worry, the sleepless nights, the doubt, they slowly melted away.

Walking out of that meeting, Den felt lighter. The EAP sessions had given him more than clarity; they helped him rebuild his confidence and reconnect with his purpose.

Now, he shares his story as a reminder: sometimes, what feels like an ending is only a pause and a moment inviting you to trust the process, to speak up, and to believe that things can still work out for your good.

Epilogue: Workplace Well-being Lessons

Communication Gaps Create Emotional Gaps

Den’s concern about losing access to files went unanswered for days, intensifying his anxiety and self-doubt.

Timely and transparent communication from leaders can prevent unnecessary fear. Even a simple acknowledgment like “We’re checking on this” can build trust and reassure employees that they are seen and valued.

The Power of EAP Support

Through the company’s EAP provider, Den processed his fears and found clarity about his situation and purpose.

EAP programs aren’t just for crises, but they are for clarity, growth, and resilience. Encouraging employees to access EAP support can lead to better mental health and stronger workplace engagement.

Purpose Beyond Position

When Den re-engaged and began mentoring teammates, he rediscovered his value beyond his technical role.

Leaders can help employees find renewed meaning by encouraging them to share their knowledge and mentor others. Recognition of contribution, not just output, builds lasting motivation.
