PowerStory #10: The Leader Within

Chapter 1: The Plateau

Nicoli had been with the company for nearly five years. He was dependable. His reports were always accurate, his deadlines consistently met, and his technical knowledge was solid. Everyone knew Nicoli as the type of employee who got the job done.

But during his latest performance review, his manager noticed something. Nicoli hadn’t declined, but he also hadn’t grown. Year after year, he stayed at the same level. For someone with his experience, the lack of progress raised a question: was Nicoli holding back?

The manager invited him for a one-on-one talk.
“Nicoli, you know your job well. Have you thought about leading a team? With your experience, I believe you can take on more responsibility.”

Nicoli looked down. “I don’t think I can. I’m not capable of leading. I don’t think I’m the right person for that kind of responsibility. There are others better than me, Sir. You should consider them instead.”

The manager saw it. This wasn’t about skills. It was about self-esteem. Nicoli wasn’t missing competence; he was missing confidence.

Taking this to heart, the manager encouraged him to join leadership trainings and also referred him to the company’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for counseling. At first, Nicoli resisted, but eventually, after months of encouraging him and asking him to just try, he agreed.

Nicoli’s journey to rediscover himself was only beginning.

Question:

Was leadership really out of Nicoli’s reach or was it hidden inside him all along?

Chapter 2: The Breakthrough

Months passed, and little by little, things began to shift. In counseling, Nicoli understood that this self-pity and self-sabotage was due to being bullied since he was a kid. He discovered that staying where he is comfortable is a way to protect himself from catching potential bullies’ attention. In the following sessions, he learned how to challenge the inner critic that had kept him silent for so long. He practiced reframing negative thoughts, learned techniques to manage anxiety, and slowly rebuilt his sense of self-worth.

On the other hand, the leadership trainings gave him structure and skills like how to facilitate meetings, delegate tasks, and communicate assertively. It wasn’t easy, but with the combination of counseling and training, Nicoli found himself equipped both emotionally and professionally.

He started small. One day, he volunteered to give updates during a team huddle. His voice shook at first, but he pushed through. The next week, he led a short discussion. His peers noticed the change. They began asking for his input more often, looking to him for guidance.

Nicoli discovered something he never expected: he was good at speaking in front of people. What once terrified him started becoming a strength. With each step, his confidence grew.

By the end of the year, Nicoli was no longer the same person his manager had spoken to months before. Yes, his heart still pounds so loud when given bigger roles and responsibilities, but he does not respond in fear and hiding anymore but with enthusiasm and willingness to take the task as an opportunity for growth.

When a managerial position opened a year and a half later, he didn’t hesitate. He applied, confident that he was ready and he got the promotion.

Nicoli’s story became an inspiration in the company. From plateauing in silence to stepping into leadership, his journey showed the power of encouragement, counseling, and resilience. What once felt impossible became his greatest achievement.

Epilogue: Workplace Well-being Lessons

A Plateau Can Signal More Than Performance
Nicoli wasn’t declining in his work—he was steady, consistent, but not growing. His manager saw that he had more potential than he realized.

When employees plateau, it’s not always a skills issue. It may point to hidden struggles like self-doubt or past experiences. Look beyond the metrics—explore what’s holding them back.

Counseling and Training Work Hand-in-Hand
Through EAP counseling, Nicoli learned to manage self-doubt; through training, he gained practical leadership skills. Together, these opened doors he once thought were closed.

Professional growth requires both skill-building and emotional support. Offer a mix of training programs and mental health resources to unlock full potential.

Belief from Leaders Inspires Growth
Nicoli’s manager believed in him long before he believed in himself. That encouragement, paired with resources, helped him transform.

Sometimes the greatest catalyst is a leader who sees potential and speaks it out. Encourage managers to recognize and nurture hidden talent.
